About Laurel
A graduate of William Jewell College with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and German, Laurel moved to Oklahoma City and earned a Master’s in Criminal Justice Administration. She went on to earn a Master of Business Administration degree from Baker University.
A promotion provided her with an opportunity to return to the Kansas City area. In 2003, Laurel made her home in western Shawnee, falling in love with its openness and smalltown feel. It has been a wonderful place to raise her son, Stiven.
A well-organized, thorough, and energetic leader, Laurel’s professional experience includes working in the national security industry for over 25 years.
Laurel brings an unwavering commitment to service in every role she undertakes. Known for her integrity and forward-thinking approach, she has built lasting relationships both professionally and personally. Her dedication to fostering growth and resilience in her surroundings is evident through her active engagement and heartfelt investment in those around her.
She attends Westside Family Church and is active in the Shawnee community. Laurel volunteers with multiple organizations that make a positive impact in the community, especially those encouraging and supporting women.
From safeguarding your hard-earned tax dollars to protecting the lush green spaces that make western Shawnee feel like home, Laurel’s vision is rooted in practical, people-centered stewardship. She believes city government should be lean, transparent, and laser-focused on essentials—meaning every penny is scrutinized and no new burdens are piled onto families already feeling the squeeze from rising costs. Laurel stands shoulder-to-shoulder with our police and fire personnel, insisting they receive the resources and respect needed to keep every street safe. At the same time, she will defend our parks against relentless high-density build-outs and hold developers accountable, demanding concrete community benefits before a single incentive is granted. In short, Laurel puts residents first, special interests last—and she’s ready to fight for a Shawnee that stays prosperous, secure, and uniquely ours.
Government closest to the people is best and often has the greatest impact on the people. It is vital that elected officials understand that it is your tax dollars that are used to fund every initiative. Therefore, it is crucial that the city council ensure every penny spent is scrutinized and spent wisely.
In addition, elected government officials should guarantee no additional burdens are added to the taxpayers. Property and sales tax collections continue to rise, adding to the cost of living, adversely affecting our community.
We must fully support and fund our first responders. Having strong and proactive public safety personnel is crucial to preserving what makes Shawnee a great place to live.
Many have chosen to call western Shawnee home because of our wonderful green spaces. Instead of focusing on building as many housing units as possible, including apartment complexes, we should focus on preserving our green spaces and increasing the number of parks for our citizens to enjoy. We must maintain this highlight of living in western Shawnee.
Every city wants growth that benefits its citizens. However, we should not engage in corporate welfare in the form of excessive grants, abatements, and carveouts for wealthy developers who make promises that are later broken.
